“What you do not eat, I will devour…right down to the core.” These lyrics ring true of everything that is Nate Maingard. A passionate indie/folk singer-songwriter from Cape Town, South Africa, Nate lives his life completely immersed in his music and his joy of sharing it with his rapidly expanding South African and international audience.

In a small village on the Atlantic side of the Cape Peninsula, Nate grew up in his father’s guitar-making workshop. Maingard Guitars being some of the best in the world, he learnt from an early age the origins of good music: from the best wood to use when making an acoustic guitar, to the sounds of Cat Stevens, Nick Drake and The Beatles. Since those early days of saw-dust, Nate has made his very own instrument and sound to go with it. His voice has been compared to Radiohead’s Thom Yorke and Ben Gibbard (of Death Cab For Cutie fame), while his easy style and melodic music brings the likes of Damian Rice, Coldplay and Jack Johnson to mind.

In 2011 Nate played over 100 shows all over South Africa, performed at three festivals and toured tirelessly. He also recorded and released his debut album The Wild Land to much critical acclaim.

When not touring, Nate is hard at work on his new EP titled Braver & Stronger, and is practicing with other Cape Town musicians to expand his sound in preparation for more touring and festivals in 2012. His aim is to “bring heartfelt, soul-filled indie/folk music even more into the ears and hearts of music fans in South Africa and the rest of the world.”

You can download three rather magical songs here. What are you waiting for? Get going.

RAMfest has always been up there as one of South Africa’s premier music festivals and this year things just got a bit more exciting.

Meet Smith & Frank. Meet Toby Meadows and Taija Marie Davis and their home-made ambient indie pop, a one of a kind sound flowing through Brisbane’s ears at the moment.

After a night of rain and wine, with the help of a built-in MacBook microphone, they discovered their sound was something special with ‘Sorry For Being Brief‘. The better part of instruments are found in household items and oddities lying around, giving their sound a raw and powerful feel. The following weeks saw plenty of writing and studio time then the release of their debut single – ‘Charlie’. And people are loving it! Losing their radio play virginity with The Sunday Washup with Dave and Kieren last week, they’ve been overwhelmed with the reponse and are frantically gathering more material and setting up what is sure to be a live show like none other.

Toby Meadows is a familiar name around Brisbane being the head honcho for local creative collective – Contortionist Studios. Having an incredible ear for music, he has set up his own studio within the Contortionist Warehouse where he has been recording the likes of Sunshine Ensemble, Mosman Alder and Arial Haze.

Taija Marie Davis is on the other end of that spectrum however. Better known for her work with Rare Finds as the Online Media Publicist and freelance artist manager, her realisation of musical ability came a little later. After she was given a 1972 Yamaha electric organ, she played her first key 6 months ago and discovered utter peace in playing. Never having had a singing lesson in her life, it was a shock to all when those notes came out.

Needless to say, this pair are sure to be a presence to keep an ear out for as they prepare for the stage!

Jeremy Loops is not a traditional band. He creates music on the spot with his gamut of loop pedals and impromptu collaborations. With The Gypsy Opera, he brings together his delicate mix of folk, hip-hop, bluegrass funk and blues all by using his guitar, ukelele, harmonica and beatboxing skills. It is something rather magical to behold.
The soundscapes created feels like a cairn, carefully layered and poised, yet built to last; but Ring has decided to use his falsetto, which has caused controversy with reviewers. Hristos Lainas’ first solo album, I Agapi Tha Lampsi (“Love Will Shine”) is stuffed to the brim with alluring pop melodies, drenched in skittering 12-bit samplers, filtered vocals, warm and luscious analog synths and infused with a pleasant aura of drowsiness. Lainas assembles an array of sounds and textures, adds sporadic splashes of static atmosphere and in the process creates a magnificent listening environment of rose-tinted optimism and disenchantment. H Thlipsi To Brady (“Sadness In The Night”) submerges a sense of intense feeling within its 80s fantasy electronic ether and instantly takes hold of your ears.
The title of this lush pop-shoegaze song means “Not a second more without music”. Billie Van’s music makes me reminisce back to the 50s and the 60s, when country music was good and Nancy Sinatra was the one; when rock ‘n’ roll meant four chords and terrific songs; when guitar solos were mandatory and slapback echo came from the amps. Her music is all of this – great pop songs, tearful country ballads and hip-shaking rock ‘n’ roll, but it’s also new and done in a refreshing way.
Galaxy Express is one of the best rock bands in Korea and have been for quite some time. During their Wild 30 project in 2010, a 30-day quest during which they recorded a piece of music for their Wild Days album every day, they showed that they put on the best of performances, even just going to karaoke. In late 2011, Galaxy Express released split EP Naughty Boy with Korean punk pioneers Crying Nut, which contained a re-recording of the somewhat atypical but gorgeous and engaging As Time Passes, Always Been Good from those wild days. Look out for more from Galaxy Express in 2012 as they’re heading for a US tour in March and playing SXSW for the second time.

Meet the supremely talented R&B/Dance vocalist Ida Corr. She is not just another pretty face. This Denmark native of Gambian and Danish ancestry became an international star when her 2007 single “Let Me Think About It” conquered dancefloors and charts all over the world. The song was remixed by DJ/Producer Fedde Le Grande and became the most played song on BBC Radio 1 and was number one of the US Billboard Dance Charts.

Now, Radikal Records announces the release of “Under The Sun”, a breakout single from vocalist Ida Corr. Her voice is both soulful and uplifting and are perfectly blended with Dance-Hall influences, giving the song massive pop appeal. Grammy winning Jamaican artist Shaggy, best known for his singles “Boombastic” and “It Wasnt Me”, lends a flirtatious, tongue-in-cheek rap to “Under The Sun”.

While the dreamy, Caribbean rhythm of “Under The Sun” has been transformed with a versatile collection of remixes from the likes of Jason Gault, Cut Up Boys, and Michael Kaye remixes deliver House and Electro renditions, where The Out Of Sight Mix, Dave Lambert & Housetrap Remix , and Lenny Ibizarre Remix take a different approach, incorporating elements of Deep House and Chill-Out. It is an eclectic package that has a mix for every mood but by far my favourite is the Jason Gault remix. Have a listen and I’m sure you’ll agree!

Meet the Russell and Dylan. Meet The Fact Checker Unit. No fact is too trivial and no celebrity is too big for these two. They take on a series of impossible fact missions. All with a little help from the Samsung Galaxy Note of course. Think creative and cutting-edge functions, as well as the generous 5.3-inch HD touch screen, to check celebrity facts by photographing, cropping and annotating evidence instantly using S Pen, digitising handwritten notes to their editor, even editing their videos. This all helps the Fact Checkers Unit check the world’s impossible claims.

On this mission we see one half the Fact Checker Unit, Dylan, hallucinating. This makes their mission rather difficult. What mission you cry? Why checking if DMC – you know, from Run-DMC – really thinks he is a king. As Dylan is acting slightly loopy we see the duo decide to spilt up going solo on this one. When suddenly we see an arrow through their handshake, and no, it is not Dylan hallucinating this time, it is none other than DMC appear at the walls. He looks surprised at the pair from Swag Magazine. And no, he really doesn’t think he is King, he is just shooting a music video for his single “I Am a King”. Yes, a music video. That has been going for two years now. Oh and the video crew? They are still helping. Oh, just the usual on set antics.

Soon DMC demands our favourite duo to be court jesters and needless to say neither are impressed. As they attempt to dance and entertain we see them being shot on a Samsung Galaxy Note. My oh my, can you shoot some great video and do some fun editing on it!

After some more crazy happenings DMC does his thing, rapping all about Fact Checkers and Swag magazine. As for more about the Galaxy Note you ask? Is it a phone? Is it a tablet? Well, it is the best of both. Android style.

p.s. Samsung kindly sponsored this post. Why? Because they believe in fact checking everything and having as much fun as possible. All with the Galaxy Note of course.

They roped in Sarah Blackwood for one of the most refreshing cover’s of Gotye and Kimbra’s smash song “Somebody That I Used To Know.”

They have caused quiet a stir with this one. It is brilliant, hilarious, original and so fantastic. Oh you know, it’s just five people playing one guitar. As people do. Beyond the craziness, the cover is simply sublime. Enjoy!

With this campaign Heineken shows they grabbed the opportunity and harnessed their responsibility to encourage moderate drinking. Think staying within your limits to experience everything the night has to offer. It is all about enjoying yourself, right up to the night’s awesome ending. At sunrise of course. The best part you ask? Naturally, it involves you, posting photos of your best sunrise moments and sharing with the world via Facebook or Twitter.

With the holiday season drawing to a close and with everyone starting their normal routines being responsible is more important than ever. Why? Well, with a new year, new resolutions and new happenings, moderation is key. So go out. Go enjoy. Go responsibly.

p.s. Heineken kindly sponsored this post. Why? Because they believe in having fun. Responsibly of course.
