The 2009 American Music Awards

“The American Music Awards honour the year’s top-selling artists in eight popular genres, with fans voting for the winners online. But even more than awards, the AMAs are about performances” and more than a dozen performed including: Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys and Jay-Z, Janet Jackson and Jennifer Lopez (who slipped during a tricky move and landed on her bottom-ouch)…

The big winners on the night were Michael Jackson (who won four posthumous awards) and Taylor Swift, stealing the show on Sunday, beating out the late King of Pop Michael Jackson for the Artist of the Year crown (how she managed that no-one can be quite sure).

The Black Eyed Peas, won favourite Pop/Rock band, Greenday beat Kings of Leon and Shinedown to take the honour of ‘Favourite Rock Artist’. Other winners Sunday included Jay-Z, Beyonce, Keith Urban and Rascal Flatts.

Of the many performances of the night, the two that got people talking were Lady Gaga and Adam Lambert.

Gaga, wearing a futuristic naked body suit launched into a typically theatrical performance of new single ‘Bad Romance’ (she set her instruments on fire, stabbed violins and then in proper rock n’ roll style smashed the violins to pieces on her piano) her performance saw the crowd give her a standing ovation…

But Adam Lambert definitely stole the show with his shock-and-awe debut of “For Your Entertainment” something that will certainly be talked about for quite some time, and some have said that it might have even over-shadowed the award winning night for Taylor Swift and Michael Jackson.

“He delivered on his promise of a “sexy” performance as he closed the live show with simulated oral sex from a male backup dancer, a brief make-out session with his male keyboardist and a giant mirrored prop so the audience could see the looks on their own shocked faces” reports Rolling Stone.

The kiss was reminiscent of Britney Spears and Madonna’s lip-lock that stole headlines at the 2003 Awards. He certainly “traded in his “American Idol” image for sex, leather and chains on Sunday.”

All in all the 2009 American Music Awards provided a night full of entertainment, some PG rated and some rather risqué.
