Skop, Skiet en Donner

Francois in studio

“We can not solve problems by using the same kind of thinking we used when we created them.” – Albert Einstein

Wynand says “we’re doing something different” with the new album, Skop, Skiet en Donner “[some] crazy new material with a completely different flavour.” The new material is exactly that; it’s something completely different that showcases a wholly different side of Van Coke Kartel.

The sound is familiar yet unfamiliar; it starts off neutrally, and then explodes into something typical to Van Coke’s unique style, yet it leaves you with a lingering sense of something once heard…

“This will be Francois’s 7th album and my 6th that we have recorded at BSharp Studios since 2001. Boksburg feel like a second home and the studio flat is all too familiar.” Says Wynand “This will be our third album Van Coke Kartel album…for the first time we really felt comfortable and well prepared for the studio. We are working with producer Pierre-Henri Pletzen (aka Yesterday’s Pupil). Besides the new material, we will also three cover songs (something completely new for us) and three acoustic arrangements of songs from Waaksaam & Wakker and our debut record…”

Francois and Hunter

Watching their daily video updates while they work on their new album is like watching a comedy-albeit one with an awesome soundtrack.

Their first video diary opens with them listening to Oasis whilst on their way to BSharp Studio in Boksburg. Wynands first comment is “Welcome to the biggest shithole known to mankind…What is this jol called?” Francois replies “The places name is kak, kak plaas” Wynand laughingly replies “but we like it here…otherwise we would never have come back…”

Their blog-which they frequently update-is full of funny anecdotes and witty comments such as when Francois writes of Peach “[He] had his drum track down…he’s not full off shit, [when picking the best parts] he is just particular.”

As for the music “The songs sound fucking rad. I have never been so happy with how the songs are sounding before we have started with the mixing” writes Francois on Day 15 “Albert of Rhythm Records popped in and are also stoke about the vibes…” Wynand writes “We are excited about the new sound and how the people will respond to it.” He continues on Day 24 writing “Skop Skiet en Donner underwent a metamorphosis! Nathan Smith’s guitar work takes the album to a new level.”

He ends off writing “We will only return to studio when we get back from Argentina on 12 October [but] we will try and keep you updated with all our stuff and missions.”

The album will be out in March 2010; in the words of Francois it’s going to be “very fucking lekker.”

Look out for it, it’ll be sure to blow your mind.
