VMA drama
Executive producer Dave Sirulnick summarized the ethos of the VMAs saying they’re a chance for someone to tune in and see “what’s hot right now”.
The 2009 VMA’s took place last night. MTV returned the VMA’s to New York, its first time there since 2006.
There was already a fair amount of controversy surrounding the possible winners as a list of the winners was supposedly leaked (many of those who won, echo what the list predicted, but one could say it was some lucky guesswork)…
The VMA’s started with a tribute to Michael Jackson and Madonna hailed Jackson as a hero, even though the memory of Jackson made a distinct imprint on the VMAs, the show was described as “a pop culture circus with as many rings as possible jammed under one tent”.
As for the winners:
Lady Gaga won the award for Best New Artist, her song “Papparrazzi” won Best Art Direction and Best Special Effects.
Rapper Eminem won Best Hip-Hop Video for “We Made You.”
Artists Matt & Kim won for Breakthrough Video.
Greenday received the awards for Best Rock Video, Best Direction and Best Cinematography.
Britney Spears walked away with Best Pop video for “Womanizer”, TI won Best Male Video and Beyonce took home the awards for with ‘Best Video’ and ‘Best Choreography’ for ‘Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it).
The real drama came was caused by Kanye West (who has an amazing knack for starting trouble) as Taylor Swift accepted her award for Best Female Video (which was a rather surprising choice) Kanye proceeded to take the mic and started protesting Swift’s selection and announced that Beyonce who was also nominated, should have won because her “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on it) video “was “one of the best videos of all time.”
Kanye made sure the VMA’s was all about him (as he has done numerous times before) a stunned Swift didn’t get to finish her acceptance speech.
But Swift got a chance to recapture her time in the spotlight as when Beyonce won Video of the year for “Single Ladies,” the pop star invited Swift out on stage to “have her [deserved] moment.”
All in all host Russell Brand summed up the VMAs well “it just gets exciting, live television, live events. People get worked up and things happen.”
