Taking a Stab at The Pervasiveness of Social Networking

The Fay Rays

News from MTN Xploaded:

”A brand new South African band, “The Fay Rays” is making its debut with a pop-rock single that takes a tongue-in-cheek stab at the pervasiveness of social networking, particularly Facebook, in our modern Web 2.0 society.

Titled ‘Social Network Greed’ the catchy song open with the lyrics: “What’s with the status that you posted yesterday / So a thousand friends could read it and have a virtual public say”. The song will be accompanied by a music video that will feature as many of The Fay Rays’ Facebook friends as possible, in what is set to be a world-first music clip.

“We didn’t do this to be the first, it’s just that it’s very topical and it was a great pop song,” the group insists.

The line between love and hate gets no thinner than on ‘Social Network Greed’, which is melodic and catchy while taking a stab at the unwitting tactlessness of some Facebook users. Although there are cynical lines about “joining a group to free the world”, the Fay Rays maintain that this is just the way it is… it’s the Web 2.0 zeitgeist.

“It’s a piece of social commentary from people who love music,” says the band.

While the lyrics are witty and well-crafted, the song has no intention of taking itself too seriously. Its mood is generally playful, with the melody of the appealing chorus sometimes being substituted with playful la-la sing along parts. Crafted by guys with a few hundred songs under their belts, it has all the makings of a radio anthem with tasteful riffs, personable yet effective singing and heartwarming harmonies.
