New MTV.alt Channel to Hit SA
Music channel MTV base is reaching out to the alternative music fans and artists by increasing programming dedicated on the channel to alternative music. Starting March 2009, MTV base will expand MTV.alt, the channel’s regular Wednesday night slot dedicated to alternative genres including rock, punk, indie, grunge, metal and hardcore.
The move comes in response to grassroots lobbying by supporters of ‘alternative’ music genres after more than 8,000 people joined an online petition on Facebook. ‘Allow MTV2 in SOUTH AFRICA!!!’ was created by South African student, bandmember and metal fan Robin Wasserman, in a effort to lobby the music broadcaster to create a dedicated African alternative music channel.
Originally launched as ‘MTV alternative’ in (April 2007), MTV.alt fast became the destination of choice for music fans seeking a regular dose of televised entertainment dedicated to alternative music genres. Combining classic and brand new alternative tracks, MTV.alt is the only place on TV in sub Saharan Africa where you get a regular dose of music from South African artists such as AKing, Ashtray Electric, Taxi Violence, The Dirty Skirts, One Day Remains, Crash Car Burn, The Plastics, New Loud Rockets and Zebra & Giraffe, alongside international artists like Kings of Leon, Kaiser Chiefs, Foals, Friendly Fires, Biffy Clyro, White Lies, Rise Against, Metallica, Slipknot, Bullet for My Valentine, Underoath and In Flames.
Commented Alex Okosi, Senior Vice President & Managing Director, MTV Networks Africa, ‘We’re always ready to listen to feedback from viewers and the idea of a dedicated indie channel similar to MTV2 here in Africa is one that we will definitely look at. While we can’t yet deliver a 24 hour alternative channel, the MTV.alt block closely reflects the MTV2 playlist from the UK which means that alternative fans can use MTV.alt to stay in touch with the music they love.’
The expanded three hour MTV.alt slot kicks off on MTV base (DStv Channel 322), on Wednesday 11th March from 9pm to midnight, combining influential longform programming such as Gonzo with Zane Lowe, Essential, and MTV LIVE!, with international and African music videos from across the alternative music spectrum...
It’s going to be awesome!
